Shopify automatic discounts combinations are settings in your Shopify admin that let two or more promotions apply to the same checkout at once — a product discount plus free shipping, for example — without the customer typing a code. Combinations are off by default: you switch them on inside each discount, and some pairings have extra conditions. If you are building or scaling a store, the complete Shopify guide for SA businesses is your starting point; this post maps which pairings are available, which ones carry conditions, and how to switch them on in your admin today.

Two of the pairings — product + order and order + order — depend on your checkout, not your plan. Shopify allows them only when your store does not use checkout.liquid customisations and does not use the Licensify app. Most stores on Basic, Grow and Advanced never had checkout.liquid on their checkout pages, and since 26 August 2026 Shopify has auto-upgraded the remaining legacy Thank you and Order status pages on non-Plus stores. So for most South African stores the question is no longer whether these pairings are allowed — it is whether anyone has switched them on.

Quick Answer

Shopify automatic discounts combinations let you layer product, order and shipping discounts on one checkout without a discount code. Product + product (on different items), product + shipping and order + shipping work on every plan. Product + order and order + order work when your store has no checkout.liquid customisations and does not use the Licensify app. Stacking two product discounts on the same line item needs Shopify Plus. Two shipping discounts never combine. Each discount must opt in to combining — it never happens by default.

What Are Shopify Automatic Discounts?

A Shopify automatic discount is a promotion that applies to a customer's cart as soon as the cart meets its conditions — no code entry needed. Shopify offers four types, each targeting a different part of the order:

TypeWhat It DiscountsCommon Use Case
Amount Off ProductsSpecific products or collectionsCategory sale — percentage off a product category or collection
Amount Off OrdersThe order subtotalSpend threshold — a fixed Rand amount off orders above a minimum value
Free ShippingShipping costIncentive — free delivery on qualifying orders above a spend threshold
Buy X Get YQualifying product(s)Bundle incentive: "Buy 2 shirts, get a cap free"

Automatic discounts differ from Shopify discount codes in one practical way: customers do nothing at checkout. That removes friction — useful for Black Friday promotions where you do not want to manage code distribution. A store can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts at once, and that count includes discounts created by apps.

Codes and automatic discounts can run together. Automatic discounts and discount codes are separate systems. A customer can receive an automatic product discount and still enter a code for free shipping — when both are set to combine. Automatic discounts do not count against the per-order code limit of 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code.

Which Shopify Automatic Discounts Combinations Are Allowed?

Combining Shopify discounts follows a fixed permission matrix: each pairing works on every store, works only when the store meets Shopify's checkout conditions, needs Shopify Plus, or is not supported. The table below follows the Shopify discount combinations documentation.

CombinationPlansConditionVerdict
Product + Product (different items)All plansBoth discounts must opt inAvailable

Order + OrderAll plansNo checkout.liquid customisations; not using the Licensify app; both discounts must opt inAvailable on most stores
Product + Product (same line item)Shopify Plus onlyPlus tag-based setupPlus only
Shipping + ShippingNot supportedN/ANot available

Critical mechanic: both discounts must opt in. You cannot enable combining from one side only. If you create a product discount and tick "order discounts" in its Combinations section, but your order discount does not have "product discounts" ticked, the combination will not activate. This is the most common setup mistake — one discount correctly configured, the other left at its default (off).

Application Order

When several discount types stack on one order, Shopify applies them in a fixed sequence: product discounts first (to individual items), then order discounts (to the revised subtotal), then shipping discounts last. You cannot change this order. Knowing it lets you price promotions so the combined saving is predictable for you and for the customer.

How to Enable Discount Combinations in Shopify Admin

Enabling Shopify discount combinations means configuring every discount that should take part — there is no store-wide switch. Here is the process for each discount:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts.
  2. Create a new discount or open an existing one.
  3. Scroll down to the Combinations section.
  4. Select which other discount types this discount can combine with:
    • Product discounts — tick if this should stack with product-level promotions
    • Order discounts — tick if this should stack with order-level promotions
    • Shipping discounts — tick to allow pairing with free shipping
  5. Save the discount.
  6. Repeat for every other discount that should be part of the combination.
  7. Place a test order that triggers both discounts and check the amounts applied.
Good: You run a percentage-off clothing discount (product discount, opted in to shipping discounts) alongside free shipping on qualifying orders (shipping discount, opted in to product discounts). A customer who qualifies for both gets the clothing saving and free delivery together. The cart shows the reduced item price, then zero shipping. Both discounts opted in — both apply.
Common mistake: You create the same two discounts but only set the product discount to combine. The shipping discount stays at its default (no combination). Result: only the product discount applies, never the free shipping. The fix takes 30 seconds but is easy to miss before a major sale.

What Happens When Shopify Discounts Conflict?

When two discounts cannot combine — because they are not set to, because they target the same item on a non-Plus store, or because your store does not meet the conditions for a pairing — Shopify automatically selects the discount or combination of discounts that gives the customer the best saving. You cannot override that choice.

Three scenarios to plan for:

ScenarioWhat Shopify DoesWhat to Watch
Two product discounts, same items, non-Plus storeApplies whichever saves the customer moreYou may not get the upsell mechanics you planned
Two shipping discountsOnly one shipping discount appliesA second shipping promotion only uses up a discount slot
Product + Order on a store with checkout.liquid customisations or the Licensify appCombination blocked; the best individual discount appliesCheck the Combinations section of a product discount — see the FAQ below

Buy X Get Y has its own constraint. Shopify classes Buy X Get Y discounts as product discounts, so the same-item rule applies: on a non-Plus store, a Buy X Get Y promotion and another product discount on the same items will not stack — Shopify applies the better one. If your strategy layers several Buy X Get Y offers on the same products — "buy 3, get 1 free" alongside "buy 5, get 2 free" — you need Shopify Plus or a third-party Shopify discount app.

For native alternatives, the Shopify product bundles guide covers bundling mechanics that work alongside Shopify discount combinations without hitting the same-item restriction. Plan each promotion layer before Black Friday — not after the first customer complaint about a discount that did not apply.

SA-Specific Considerations for Shopify Automatic Discounts Combinations

Three factors shape Shopify automatic discounts combinations for South African stores: the 26 August 2026 checkout upgrade (which removed the last legacy checkout customisations on non-Plus stores), the Consumer Protection Act's price-display rule (which binds you to the lowest price you show), and the absence of Shopify Payments in South Africa, which means PayFast, Peach Payments, Yoco or Ozow processes the final discounted charge.

The stakes are rising. World Wide Worx's Online Retail in South Africa 2026 report forecasts R159 billion in South African online retail in 2026 — the first year online is expected to reach 10% of total retail. Layering automatic discounts correctly is part of competing for that spend heading into Black Friday 2026 (27 November).

Three SA-specific points to check before the next sale period:

1. Your checkout status after 26 August 2026. Non-Plus stores that still had legacy Thank you and Order status page customisations — including old "Additional scripts" — were auto-upgraded by Shopify on that date, and those scripts stopped running. If your store relied on them for tracking, check that your conversion tracking still fires. Then confirm your discount options: open any product discount and check that "Order discounts" can be ticked in its Combinations section. Because Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa, also run a test order through your payment gateway setup (PayFast, Peach Payments, Yoco or Ozow) to confirm the gateway charges the discounted total.

2. CPA section 23(6) and displayed prices. South Africa's Consumer Protection Act says a supplier may not charge more than the displayed price — and when more than one price is displayed at the same time, the consumer pays the lowest. If a discount shows in the cart but does not apply at payment because a combination box was left unticked, the customer can hold you to the lower amount. The practical fix: test every combination with a test order before a promotion goes live, and confirm that what shows in the cart is what the gateway charges. This is a compliance point, not legal advice — consult your own adviser for specific situations.

3. Volume pricing for B2B buyers. If you sell wholesale through B2B catalogs, quantity rules and volume pricing set the price per unit by quantity. Pairing that with a free shipping threshold creates a compound incentive without Shopify Plus. Plan the sequence: the volume price sets the line price, an order discount (if used) applies to the new subtotal, and the shipping discount removes delivery cost last.

Pre-Launch Checklist for SA Stores

  • Every participating discount has the correct combination boxes ticked
  • Test order placed and discount amounts checked in the cart and at payment
  • Cart display and final charge match (CPA section 23(6))
  • Payment flow (PayFast / Peach Payments / Yoco / Ozow) confirmed with a test order
  • Active automatic discounts below the 25-per-store limit (app discounts count)
  • Store does not use the Licensify app, which blocks product + order and order + order combinations

Why South African Businesses Choose Growth Pulse Media

Dirk van Greuning built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before founding Growth Pulse Media. That operator background — running promotions, paying couriers, managing seasonal sales spikes — is the foundation of how GPM approaches Shopify configuration. We are a registered Shopify Partner and Omnisend Certified Partner, working in-house with a deliberately limited client load so every store gets senior attention.

For SA Shopify stores, the practical gap is rarely feature knowledge — it is configuration detail: one discount not opted in, a test order skipped, a checkout change nobody re-tested. The difference between a promotion that works and one that silently fails is often two unticked boxes in admin.

The GPM Shopify marketing service covers both the strategy (which promotions to run for SA consumers, when, and how to layer them) and the technical setup (Shopify automatic discounts combinations configured correctly, checkout tested, and analytics intact). All work is executed in-house. No obligation — contact us and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

Who This Is NOT For

Stores that need same-item discount stacking. If your promotion strategy depends on layering two discounts on the same product — a member price plus a sale price on the same SKU — you need Shopify Plus or a third-party app. Native Shopify on Basic through Advanced picks the better of the two; it does not combine them.
Shopify Plus stores still running checkout.liquid customisations, or any store using the Licensify app. Shopify blocks product + order and order + order combinations for these stores. Remove the dependency first; until then, plan promotions around product + shipping and order + shipping, which work everywhere.
Stores running more than 25 simultaneous automatic promotions. The 25-active-automatic-discount limit applies across the store, including app discounts. If you run many category-level automatic discounts at once, you will hit this ceiling. Plan your promotion calendar so ended or redundant promotions are switched off before new ones go live — not after a customer reports a discount that did not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Shopify automatic discounts combine with discount codes?

Yes. Automatic discounts and discount codes run as separate systems in Shopify. A customer can receive an automatic product discount on a collection and also enter a discount code for free shipping or an order reduction, provided both are set to combine. Automatic discounts do not count against the per-order limit of five product or order codes and one shipping code.

Do Shopify automatic discounts combinations require Shopify Plus?

Most combinations do not require Shopify Plus. Product + shipping, order + shipping and product + product (on different items) work on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Product + order and order + order also work on those plans, as long as the store has no checkout.liquid customisations and does not use the Licensify app. Only stacking two or more discounts on the same line item requires Shopify Plus.

What is the maximum number of active automatic discounts on a Shopify store?

Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts per store at any one time, including discounts created by apps. The limit applies across all discount types — product, order, shipping and Buy X Get Y. Switch off promotions that have ended to free up slots before creating new ones, particularly ahead of major sales periods.

What happens when two non-combinable discounts both qualify on one order?

Shopify automatically applies whichever discount — or combination of discounts — gives the customer the greatest saving. You cannot override it to favour a less generous option. If you run two overlapping promotions that cannot combine, design them so that the best outcome for the customer is still acceptable to your margin.

How do I check if my SA Shopify store can combine product and order discounts?

Open any product discount in your Shopify admin and scroll to the Combinations section. If "Order discounts" can be ticked, your store meets Shopify's conditions. If it cannot, the usual causes are checkout.liquid customisations, which mainly affect older Shopify Plus stores, or the Licensify app — remove the dependency and check again.
