A Shopify test order is a simulated purchase that lets you verify every part of your store — payments, tax calculations, email notifications, fulfilment triggers and shipping rates — before a real customer encounters a problem. On Shopify in South Africa, testing has one extra dimension: because Shopify Payments is not available locally, you're running a third-party gateway such as PayFast, Peach Payments or Ozow.

That gateway needs its own separate sandbox check alongside Shopify's built-in checkout test. Most global guides skip this entirely and leave SA merchants with a half-verified store.

Running a complete check is straightforward. Do it before launch, after any change to your payment settings, and whenever you update your checkout flow, discount rules or checkout configuration. If you build this into your pre-launch process now, you'll catch problems that your first real customer would otherwise find for you.

Quick Answer

To place a Shopify test order: go to Settings > Payments, deactivate your live payment provider, activate the Test Payment Gateway, and complete a purchase using card number "1" (approved), "2" (declined) or "3" (gateway error). Deactivate test mode immediately afterwards — customers cannot place live orders while test mode is active. SA merchants must also test their actual payment gateway (PayFast, Peach Payments) in that provider's own sandbox environment, since Shopify Payments test mode is not available in South Africa.

Why Every SA Shopify Store Needs a Test Order Before Going Live

A misconfigured checkout can fail silently. A customer reaches the payment screen, the gateway returns an error, and they leave — no order in your admin, no notification to you, and no idea why. The most common failure points for South African stores are payment gateway API credentials entered incorrectly, sandbox mode left active on a live store, incorrect VAT settings (SA VAT-registered businesses need the correct rate applied to applicable products), and shipping carrier integrations that calculate incorrectly for local zones.

The issue unique to SA merchants is that the two testing layers are independent. Shopify's Test Payment Gateway confirms that your checkout flow works end-to-end — cart, checkout, order confirmation, email, fulfilment trigger. But it does not touch your actual gateway. PayFast, Peach Payments and Ozow each process payments through their own systems, and those systems need separate verification using each provider's sandbox environment. A store that has passed a Test Payment Gateway check and skipped the gateway sandbox check is only half-tested.

Common mistake: An SA merchant activates PayFast, runs one Shopify test order using the Test Payment Gateway (which bypasses PayFast entirely), and goes live confident the store is ready. The first real customer finds their card declined because the PayFast API keys were copied incorrectly. The sale is lost and the error only shows in the PayFast dashboard, not in Shopify's orders.

Place a test order during initial setup, whenever you change payment providers or add a new gateway, and after any update to your checkout theme or discount logic. If you're not sure when to place a test order, the safe rule is: any change to your checkout flow warrants a new check.

Step 1 — Place a Shopify Test Order with the Test Payment Gateway

The Test Payment Gateway is the primary method for verifying Shopify's checkout flow. Before you test a Shopify order for the first time, note that this method requires an active paid plan — the gateway is not accessible during the free trial period.

It is built into every paid Shopify plan, requires no external account, and simulates approved payments, declined cards and gateway errors without charging anyone. (In older Shopify documentation you may see it referred to as the Bogus Gateway — the functionality is the same.)

  1. Go to Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin.
  2. Deactivate your live payment provider. Click Manage next to your active gateway (PayFast, Peach Payments, etc.) and select Deactivate. You will restore it immediately after testing.
  3. Add the Test Payment Gateway. In the Payment providers section, click Choose a provider, search for "Test payment gateway", select it, click Activate, then Save. (SA merchants don't have a Shopify Payments section — "Choose a provider" is the correct branch for your admin.)
  4. Open your storefront and add a product to your cart. Use a real product from your catalogue — this tests any discount rules, tax calculations and shipping rates attached to actual items.
  5. Proceed to checkout. Enter any name and delivery address. Use an email address ending in @example.com to avoid cluttering your real inbox with test notifications.
  6. Enter the test card details at the payment screen (see table below).
  7. Complete the order. Once your Shopify test purchase is confirmed in the admin, proceed to the post-order verification checklist below.
  8. Return to Settings > Payments immediately. Deactivate the Test Payment Gateway and reactivate your live provider. Customers cannot place real orders while test mode is active.

Which Testing Method Should SA Merchants Use?

The table below maps each common SA gateway setup to the correct combination of testing methods. The Test Payment Gateway covers Shopify's checkout flow for all setups — the right column shows what additional testing each gateway requires.

Your SA gateway setupCheckout flow testPayment processing testBest for
No live gateway yet (store in setup)Test Payment Gateway ✓Not required yetPre-launch flow check only

Peach Payments connectedTest Payment Gateway ✓Peach sandbox at sandbox-dashboard.peachpayments.comFull pre-launch verification
Multiple gateways (e.g. PayFast + Ozow)Test Payment Gateway ✓Test each gateway's sandbox separatelyRecommended for high-volume SA stores

Key Point

Deactivate test mode before reopening your store to customers. While any payment provider is in test mode, Shopify prevents real buyers from completing purchases through that gateway — this applies even if the store is publicly accessible.

Step 2 — Testing Your SA Payment Gateway in Sandbox Mode

Because Shopify Payments is unavailable in South Africa, Shopify payment testing divides into two separate exercises: the Test Payment Gateway confirms checkout flow, and your gateway's sandbox confirms actual payment processing. The Test Payment Gateway check alone does not verify that your real SA gateway will successfully process a card or instant EFT payment. Each major South African gateway provides its own sandbox environment for exactly this purpose.

PayFast Sandbox Testing

PayFast provides a sandbox environment at sandbox.payfast.co.za. Register using your email address to generate a unique sandbox Merchant ID and Key — these are separate from your live credentials and must never be used in your production store. Once you have sandbox credentials:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to your PayFast payment settings.
  2. Replace your live Merchant ID and Key with your sandbox credentials.
  3. Place a test purchase through your store and confirm the transaction appears in the PayFast sandbox dashboard.
  4. Restore your live PayFast credentials before reopening your store.

Peach Payments Sandbox Testing

Peach Payments' sandbox dashboard is at sandbox-dashboard.peachpayments.com. Peach recommends using a separate Shopify store for sandbox testing rather than toggling test mode on your production store — enabling test mode on a live Shopify store stops live transactions immediately. For basic card testing in the Peach sandbox, the test card numbers 4111 1111 1111 1111 and 4242 4242 4242 4242 simulate successful transactions. All sandbox credentials and API keys are available inside the sandbox dashboard under your account.

If Your Gateway Has No Sandbox Mode

Some smaller SA payment providers don't offer a sandbox environment. In that case, place a real order using a real card, then cancel it and process a refund immediately. The gateway will charge its standard transaction fee, and many providers treat that fee as non-refundable. Shopify's standard third-party gateway fee also applies to any real transaction on top of the gateway's own charges. Keep the test order value low, and only use this approach when the gateway genuinely offers no sandbox alternative.

Two-Step Verification for SA Stores

Step 1 (Test Payment Gateway) proves your Shopify checkout, emails, fulfilment and shipping calculations work. Step 2 (gateway sandbox) proves your actual payment processor will accept a real card or EFT. Both steps are required for a complete pre-launch check — running only one leaves real risk in your store.

Your Post-Launch Verification Checklist

A completed test order is useful only if you systematically check every system it touched. Confirming the order appeared in your admin is the minimum — the following items are what actually matter for a South African store going live.

CheckpointWhat to look forWhy it matters for SA stores
Order confirmation emailArrives at your @example.com test address; correct store name, product details, totalPOPIA requires you to communicate order details clearly; broken emails create support load
Admin notificationYour store email received a new-order notificationSilent failures here mean you miss orders without knowing
Tax calculationVAT applied correctly to taxable productsIncorrect tax display creates compliance risk for VAT-registered merchants
Shipping ratesCorrect rate displayed for the test delivery addressSA courier rates vary by zone; incorrect rates cause margin loss or abandoned checkouts
Fulfilment triggerOrder moved to the correct fulfilment status (manual or automatic)Automated fulfilment errors cause dispatch delays
Declined card flowCard number "2" shows the correct error message and retry optionSA shoppers who see a confusing error screen abandon the checkout entirely
Refund processYou can process both a partial and full refund on the test orderQualifying remote purchases attract a 7-day cooling-off right under ECTA s44, but several categories are excluded — including unsealed digital goods, custom orders and services already performed. Confirm which of your products are in scope before configuring your refund policy.

For stores selling subscriptions or using Shopify's third-party payment gateways, also check that recurring billing triggers and webhook notifications behave as expected. The Test Payment Gateway does not support subscription products — use your live gateway's sandbox for those flows.

Cleaning Up: How to Cancel and Archive After Testing

Shopify does not allow permanent order deletion — test orders remain in the system but can be cancelled and archived so they don't distort your order count or fulfilment queue.

To cancel a test order: go to Orders, open the test order, click More actions > Cancel order. Turning off Shopify test mode is equally important — return to Settings > Payments and confirm your live provider is active before you walk away from your desk. Choose whether to restock any items (relevant if your products track inventory), confirm, and the order moves to a cancelled status. To remove it from your active orders list, select More actions > Archive order.

Test orders placed through gateways other than the Test Payment Gateway cannot be deleted from Shopify — archiving is the only way to move them out of view. If your test order is in a fulfilled state, you may need to refund and cancel it in sequence before archiving is available.

Who This Is NOT For

The Test Payment Gateway method described in this guide is designed for standard Shopify merchant stores processing live orders — it does not apply to the following setups.

Shopify POS-only merchants. The Test Payment Gateway is not compatible with Shopify POS. If your store is primarily a point-of-sale operation, you need a different testing approach — either Shopify Payments (not available in SA) or direct testing with your POS hardware and gateway.

Merchants selling subscription products. The Test Payment Gateway does not support subscription billing. To test subscriptions on a South African Shopify store, you need to use your live gateway's sandbox and a test subscription app — a different process not covered in this guide.

Developers building custom checkout extensions. If you're working in Shopify's checkout extensibility framework or building a Shopify Function, you need test orders in a development store or partner sandbox — not the standard merchant test flow described here.

Live stores with no recent checkout changes. If your store has been processing real orders without issue for months and you haven't changed your payment settings, theme or checkout rules, a new test order adds minimal value. Reserve the process for meaningful changes — not routine maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place a Shopify test order on a free trial?

No. Shopify requires an active paid plan to test payment gateways. During the free trial period, the Test Payment Gateway is not available. You need to select a paid plan before you can activate test mode and run a simulated order — visit Shopify's pricing page for current plan costs.

Does a Shopify test order affect my inventory?

Test orders placed through the Test Payment Gateway are excluded from your financial reports and payouts, and according to practitioner sources do not reduce your inventory counts. However, use your post-order checklist to verify that your inventory settings are behaving as expected — particularly for products with limited stock or oversell prevention enabled.

Can customers still buy while I'm running a Shopify test order?

No. As soon as you activate test mode on any payment provider, Shopify prevents real customers from completing purchases through that gateway. This is why you must deactivate test mode immediately after testing. Run test orders during off-peak hours if you're testing on a live store, and restore your live gateway before you leave your desk.

How do I test PayFast on Shopify in South Africa?

PayFast provides a sandbox environment at sandbox.payfast.co.za. Register with your email address to generate sandbox Merchant ID and Key credentials. Enter these into your Shopify PayFast settings (replacing your live credentials), run a test transaction through your storefront, confirm the payment appears in the PayFast sandbox dashboard, and then restore your live credentials before reopening your store to customers.

How do I remove a test order from Shopify?

Shopify does not allow permanent order deletion. To clear a test order, go to Orders, open the order, click More actions > Cancel order, then More actions > Archive order. This removes it from your active orders list while keeping the record accessible. Test orders placed through third-party gateways (rather than the Test Payment Gateway) cannot be deleted — archiving is the only option.
