Shopify pre order setup lets you sell products before they are ready to ship — taking payment (or a reservation) upfront so you can validate demand, fund production, and land revenue before a single unit leaves a warehouse. For South African merchants the mechanic works well in principle, but there is a payment-gateway constraint that every global guide skips and that changes the approach entirely.
South Africa sits on a growing online retail base, and Shopify for South African stores handles pre-orders through two distinct routes: a native setting that requires no extra software, and a third-party app that unlocks deposit models, automatic "Pre-Order" button labelling, and customer email flows. Which route you choose depends largely on how long your lead time is and — critically — which payment gateway you run. Planning your ecommerce build before you configure pre-orders makes the process considerably less painful.
Quick Answer
Shopify pre order setup uses either the native "Continue selling when out of stock" setting (free, upfront payment only) or a dedicated shopify pre order app from the App Store (more control, deposit models, automated emails). South African stores running PayFast, Peach Payments, or Ozow can only charge customers upfront — Shopify's deferred-charge (charge-later) model requires Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa, and PayPal Express is generally not set up to accept inbound customer payments for SA merchant accounts on Shopify. Under ECTA, the default execution window for an electronic transaction is 30 days from the order date; stating the expected ship date at checkout establishes an agreed alternative timeframe.

Ask us — no obligationWhat Shopify Pre-Orders Actually Do
A Shopify pre-order is an order placed and confirmed — often with full or partial payment — before the product is physically available to ship. The store continues selling through a zero-inventory state rather than showing a dead "Out of Stock" wall. Done well, pre-orders serve three real commercial purposes: they test whether demand exists before committing to production costs, they fund stock purchases or manufacturing deposits upfront, and they reduce the revenue gap that appears when a popular product sells out while reorder stock is in transit.
Unlike back-orders (which typically imply a known short delay), pre-orders can span weeks or months. That window is where SA-specific mechanics — particularly around payment and legal obligations — matter most.
Pre-order vs back-order vs waitlist
Pre-order: Customer commits to purchase (with payment) before stock is ready. Back-order: Product is temporarily out of stock but on its way; customer pays normally. Waitlist: Customer expresses interest, no payment taken; merchant notifies when available. Shopify supports all three, but only pre-orders and back-orders collect revenue before fulfillment.
Shopify Pre Order Setup: Two Methods
Shopify gives merchants two ways to set up pre orders on Shopify — one built into the platform at no extra cost and one that needs a third-party app. The right choice depends on how long your pre-order window runs and whether you need anything beyond basic upfront charging.
Method 1 — Native ("Continue selling when out of stock")
This is Shopify's built-in route. It takes three steps to configure:
- Enable the inventory setting: The core shopify pre order settings live in your admin under Products → select the product → scroll to Inventory → tick "Continue selling when out of stock." Do this per variant if the product has size or colour options. Once ticked, customers can place orders when stock hits zero.
- Switch to manual payment capture: Go to Settings → Payments → Payment capture and select Manually. This authorises the card at checkout but holds the charge until you manually capture it when you ship. Leave this on automatic and the card is charged immediately — fine for short windows, but watch the authorisation expiry (see below).
- Add pre-order messaging: Edit your product description or use a theme section to display the expected ship date prominently. Without a clear date, customers assume you will ship soon. Under ECTA, if no agreed date exists, the 30-day default rule applies.
What goes wrong: Leaving the product image, title, and description completely unchanged while ticking "continue selling." The checkout shows no indication the item is a pre-order. The customer expects normal delivery, contacts support two weeks later, and a refund request follows.
Native method limitation — the authorisation window. When you run manual capture, the payment gateway authorises the customer's card, but that authorisation expires after a period that varies by gateway and card network — typically around 7 days, but sometimes longer. Confirm the exact window with your SA gateway provider before relying on manual capture for any pre-order campaign. If your pre-order runs longer than the authorisation window, the auth lapses before you can capture, so the native method effectively requires you to charge immediately at checkout — full upfront payment, no deferred option.
Method 2 — Pre-order app
A dedicated shopify pre order app adds the logic the native method lacks: a labelled "Pre-Order" button, automated confirmation and update emails, quantity limits, optional discounts, and — on compatible gateways — deposit or partial-payment models. The Shopify App Store's pre-order category lists dozens of options; four consistently appear at the top by rating and review volume: STOQ, Timesact, PreOrder Globo, and Notify Me all have free plans and a "Built for Shopify" badge, meaning they follow Shopify's current theme and checkout standards.
| App | Rating | Reviews | Free plan | Built for Shopify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STOQ | 5.0★ | 3,760+ | Yes | Yes |
| Timesact | 5.0★ | 2,090+ | Yes | Yes |
| PreOrder Globo | 4.9★ | 1,940+ | Yes | Yes |
| Notify Me! | 4.9★ | 3,850+ | Yes | Yes |

Setting Up With a Pre-Order App (Step by Step)
Installing and configuring a pre-order app on a modern Shopify 2.0 theme takes under an hour once you know what decisions to make before you start.
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store and grant the permissions it requests (typically product and order access).
- Add the app block to your theme: In Online Store → Themes → Customise, navigate to your product template and add the app's block above or below the "Add to cart" button. The app replaces or supplements the button for pre-order-eligible products automatically.
- Select products and variants for pre-order status inside the app's dashboard. You can apply it to specific SKUs or set rules (e.g., "any variant with zero inventory").
- Set your payment model: Most apps offer charge-upfront as the default. Check the SA gateway constraint section below before selecting anything else.
- Configure messaging: Set your estimated ship date, pre-order badge text, and confirmation email copy. Clear, honest dates reduce support tickets.
- Set quantity limits if you have a production cap — pre-orders for 50 units when production supports 40 is a refund queue waiting to happen.
- Test before going live: Place a test pre-order, confirm the button label, the confirmation email, and the fulfillment hold appear correctly. See the Shopify test order checklist for a complete pre-launch run.
Fulfillment holds: Most apps automatically place a fulfillment hold on pre-orders. This stops the order from flowing to your courier or 3PL before stock is ready. When inventory arrives, you release the hold — either manually from the app dashboard or automatically based on inventory triggers. Always confirm your logistics partner or courier (The Courier Guy, Aramex, Dawn Wing) handles held orders correctly before you run your first pre-order campaign.
The SA Payment Gateway Constraint — What Most Guides Don't Cover
The most important SA-specific fact about shopify pre order setup is this: Shopify's deferred-charge model — where the customer's card is stored and charged only when stock arrives — requires Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. Shopify Payments is not available in South Africa. PayPal Express is also generally not set up to accept inbound customer payments for SA merchant accounts on Shopify.
In practical terms this means SA stores running PayFast, Peach Payments, or Ozow — which describes the vast majority of SA Shopify merchants — generally cannot use Shopify's native deferred-charge or deposit model. The following table sets out what is and is not available depending on your gateway.
| Payment model | How it works | Available to SA stores (PayFast / Peach / Ozow)? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charge upfront | 100% payment at checkout | ✓ Yes — works with all SA gateways | Lead times under 60 days; lower-priced items |
| Charge later | Card vaulted; charged when stock arrives | ✗ No — requires Shopify Payments or PayPal Express | Long lead times; perishable cash flow |
| Deposit / partial payment | Partial payment now; balance later | ⚠ App-dependent — some apps have own payment infrastructure; verify before selecting | High-ticket items; reduces cancellations |
| Capture-only (no charge) | No payment collected; demand captured only | ✓ Yes — use a waitlist or notify-me flow instead | Early demand validation |
The practical implication: most SA Shopify stores will run charge-upfront pre-orders. This is fine for products with lead times under 8 weeks and prices where customers are comfortable paying fully in advance. For high-ticket items (furniture, custom equipment, bespoke goods) where a deposit model would reduce risk for both sides, investigate whether your chosen pre-order app has its own payment processing that operates outside Shopify's native gateway restriction — some do, some don't. Contact the app's support team and confirm before you commit to a campaign.
What works well: A South African apparel brand using Shopify and PayFast enables a charge-upfront pre-order for a new seasonal range. Products show a clear estimated ship date, a "Pre-Order" badge replaces the "Add to Cart" button, and customers receive an immediate confirmation email with the expected delivery window. The shop sells 80 units before the garments arrive — funding the production order and eliminating stock risk entirely.
Third-party gateway fees still apply on pre-orders just as on standard orders — your PayFast, Peach Payments, or Ozow transaction fee is deducted regardless of whether the order ships today or in six weeks. Budget for this when pricing your pre-order offer.
SA Legal Requirements for Pre-Orders
South African pre-orders are governed by two statutes: ECTA sets a default execution window of 30 days from the order date (overridden by a stated ship date agreed at checkout), and the Consumer Protection Act gives buyers cancellation rights that a blanket "no-refunds on pre-orders" policy cannot override. Ignoring either creates compliance exposure and customer disputes.
ECTA's 30-day delivery obligation. The Electronic Communications and Transactions Act sets a default execution window of 30 days from the order date for electronic transactions. A pre-order overrides this default by establishing an agreed alternative timeframe — which means your product page and order confirmation must clearly state the expected ship date. If you display "Ships January 2027" at checkout, that constitutes the agreed timeframe.
If you display nothing and stock takes three months, you are in breach of the default rule. If circumstances delay fulfillment beyond the agreed window, ECTA requires you to notify the customer before the deadline and offer a full refund.
ECTA s44 cooling-off right. For qualifying electronic transactions, consumers have a 7-day cooling-off right from the date of receiving the goods. This applies after delivery, not after purchase — but it is worth noting in your returns policy so customers know their rights once the pre-ordered item eventually arrives.
CPA cancellation rights. The Consumer Protection Act gives consumers the right to cancel advance bookings or reservations. You may charge a reasonable cancellation fee if the customer cancels a pre-order, but a blanket "no refunds on pre-orders" policy does not override CPA rights. State cancellation terms clearly at checkout and in your confirmation email.
Three things every SA pre-order page must show
1. The estimated ship date or delivery window, stated clearly near the buy button. 2. The payment terms — whether the customer is charged now, or partly now and partly later. 3. Cancellation terms, including any fee and the process to cancel before fulfillment. These three elements satisfy both ECTA and CPA obligations and reduce disputes.
Keeping Customers Onside During the Pre-Order Window
Silence is the main cause of pre-order cancellations and chargebacks. Customers who paid weeks ago and have heard nothing will begin to doubt whether the order exists. A structured communication sequence costs almost nothing to set up with Omnisend or Klaviyo and materially reduces drop-off.
- Immediate confirmation: The order confirmation email should state the estimated ship date, the payment terms, and how to reach you with questions. Do not rely on Shopify's default email template — it will say nothing about the pre-order status.
- Mid-window update: For pre-orders longer than three weeks, send at least one progress update — even if it only confirms you are on schedule. Practitioners recommend updating customers every two to four weeks for longer campaigns.
- Dispatch notification: When stock ships, send an immediate notification with tracking. This is the highest-engagement email in the sequence.
- Charge notification (if deferred model): If you are using any deferred payment model, notify the customer before the card is charged. Unexplained charges trigger disputes.
Klaviyo and Omnisend both integrate directly with Shopify and make these flows automatable. The Shopify email automation flows guide covers the technical setup in detail.

Growth Pulse Media was founded by Dirk van Greuning, who built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before starting the agency. That means the advice here — including the gateway constraint above — comes from someone who has actually configured Shopify stores for the SA market, not from a checklist written for a global audience.
As a registered Shopify Partner, GPM handles end-to-end Shopify builds and growth strategy for SA merchants. Our Shopify marketing service covers store configuration, email automation on Omnisend and Klaviyo, and paid acquisition — all executed in-house with a limited client load so every account gets senior attention. We work with the payment gateways SA stores actually use: PayFast, Peach Payments, and Ozow. We do not recommend setups that only work on Shopify Payments.

Who This Is NOT For
Pre-orders create legal commitments and customer expectations that some SA stores are not yet ready to manage. Four situations where launching one does more harm than good.
Stores without a confirmed supply chain. A pre-order commits you to a delivery date in the eyes of the law. If your supplier has not confirmed lead times and you are running a pre-order on hope, you will end up issuing refunds under ECTA and managing CPA disputes. Confirm your production and shipping timelines before opening pre-orders.
High-ticket stores that need deposit models but haven't verified their app's payment support. Some pre-order apps offer deposit functionality using their own payment infrastructure. Others do not. If you are selling high-ticket items and want to collect a deposit upfront, check with the app's support team that deposits work specifically with your SA gateway before launching. Discovering this incompatibility mid-campaign costs you customers.
Merchants who plan to run pre-orders without shipping date messaging. Launching a pre-order with no estimated delivery date — only a vague "coming soon" — creates legal exposure under ECTA and a customer service burden. Every pre-order product page needs a clear, honest ship window.
Businesses expecting the native method to handle long campaigns. The native "continue selling when out of stock" approach with manual capture relies on a gateway authorisation that expires — typically within 7 days, though this varies by gateway and card network. For any pre-order running beyond that window, you need either an app or you charge fully upfront at checkout. If the product is months from shipping and you charge upfront, communicate this clearly — the customer is extending credit to you.

Do I need to upgrade my Shopify plan to use pre-orders?
No. The native "continue selling when out of stock" setting and all major pre-order apps work on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans. You do not need Plus to run pre-orders. However, Shopify's native deferred-charge purchase option API requires approved payment gateways (Shopify Payments or PayPal Express) — for SA merchants this means the native deferred model is generally unavailable regardless of plan.
Can I run a pre-order with PayFast or Peach Payments?
Yes — for charge-upfront pre-orders. PayFast, Peach Payments, and Ozow all process standard upfront payments normally on pre-order products. What they cannot do is support Shopify's native deferred-charge model (charge-later), because that requires Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. Some third-party pre-order apps offer their own deposit and charge-later infrastructure — confirm compatibility with your specific gateway before selecting that payment model.
What happens to my Shopify inventory when a pre-order is placed?
When the shopify pre order inventory setting "continue selling when out of stock" is enabled, inventory counts go negative as pre-orders come in. This gives you a live count of how many units you have sold beyond your current stock — useful for production planning. Once stock arrives, you update inventory to reflect the new quantity and release fulfillment holds from your pre-order app. Shopify will then process the orders against the available inventory.
How do I handle a mixed cart — one pre-order item and one in-stock item?
By default, Shopify splits a mixed cart into two separate fulfillments: the in-stock item ships immediately, the pre-order item ships when available. This creates two shipments and two sets of courier costs, which can surprise customers. Most pre-order apps let you configure how mixed carts are handled — some hold all items until the pre-order is fulfilled, others split them. Decide which approach suits your product, state it at checkout, and test with a real order before your campaign goes live.
Does ECTA apply to pre-orders even if I state a ship date?
Yes. ECTA's consumer protection provisions apply to all qualifying electronic transactions. Stating a ship date at checkout establishes the agreed alternative timeframe, overriding the default 30-day execution window — but if you miss that stated date you must notify the customer and offer a full refund. ECTA's 7-day cooling-off right applies to the goods once the customer has received them, not to the pre-order purchase date itself.
