Klaviyo pricing is set by the number of active profiles in your account rather than the emails you plan to send, and in Rand the Email plan runs from a free tier for up to 250 profiles to about R6,568 a month at 25,000 profiles. This is the platform cost behind the email marketing programme many SA ecommerce stores run, and it is billed in US dollars, so the Rand figure moves with the exchange rate.

The Rand figures below use R16.42 to the dollar, the exchange rate assumption behind the SA Digital Cost Index (August 2026). It is an index assumption, not a live rate, so the post also gives you the multiplication to redo every line at today's rate. Paid tier prices were cross-checked against public trackers in October 2026, and Klaviyo's own Billing screen is the final word on your account.

Quick Answer

Klaviyo pricing South Africa buyers face starts at free for up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. Paid Email plans are billed in USD: $20 a month (about R328) at 500 profiles, $100 (R1,642) at 5,000 and $150 (R2,463) at 10,000, at R16.42 to the dollar. Email-suppressed and unsubscribed contacts drop out of the count, so the main lever you control is how many emailable profiles you hold; SMS is billed on top.

Klaviyo Pricing in Rand: What Each Tier Costs

The Klaviyo Email plan is a ladder of prices keyed to active profile count, and the table converts the rungs that at least two public trackers agree on into Rand per month, per year and per profile. Klaviyo's own pricing page shows the free plan and a calculator, so the paid prices here are tracker-reported (MailSoftly, Yocto and SendX, October 2026) rather than copied from Klaviyo. Treat the calculator as the authority on what you will pay.

To redo any row at today's rate, multiply the dollar price by the rate you see on your bank's app: $100 at R16.42 is R1,642. The Klaviyo free plan allows up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, and Klaviyo states that once you pass its limits you cannot send more until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade.

Takeaway: the curve flattens

Klaviyo's Email plan gets cheaper per profile up to about 10,000 profiles, then levels off: about R0.66 per profile a month at 500 profiles, R0.33 at 5,000, R0.25 at 10,000 and R0.26 at 25,000 (R16.42 to the dollar). Doubling from 5,000 to 10,000 profiles adds $50 a month, a 50% rise for twice the audience.

The table has gaps on purpose. Trackers disagree on some rungs between 1,000 and 5,000 profiles, and each publishes only selected rungs above that, so read your own rung in your account under Billing, then Change plan. One tracker reports that each tier includes a send allowance of roughly ten times the profile count. Klaviyo's explainer says its pricing details apply to month-to-month customers, and the trackers read did not mention an annual discount.

What Counts as an Active Profile

An active profile is any contact Klaviyo can email, and that definition, not your subscriber count, decides which tier you pay for. Klaviyo's billing help article says "any profile, regardless of consent status, that can be emailed through Klaviyo is considered an active profile", which covers shoppers who only typed an email at checkout.

Klaviyo's pricing explainer then says unsubscribed and suppressed contacts do not count toward billing. Read together, the two pages mean consent status alone does not exclude a profile, but an email suppression does, once it is processed. An SMS-only unsubscribe does not remove a profile you can still email. Profiles with only a phone number do not count toward the Profiles and Email plan.

The practical consequence for Klaviyo active profiles is that a store with 4,000 newsletter subscribers can be billed on a much larger number if checkout, form and import data have created many more emailable profiles. Check the active profile count in Billing before you compare your list to the table. How you organise those profiles into groups is a separate question, covered in Klaviyo lists vs segments.

USD Billing, Exchange Rate and VAT for SA Businesses

Klaviyo bills South African customers in US dollars, so your Klaviyo pricing per month in Rand is the dollar plan price times whatever rate your bank applies on the day the card is charged. A Klaviyo reply on its community forum states that "all of our listed prices are in US Dollars" and that this is the billing currency on every invoice, though the charge may show in your local currency on your card statement.

Changing your account currency to Rand does not change this. Klaviyo's help centre says the setting only updates the symbol shown in reports and templates.

Klaviyo accepts credit cards and does not support multiple cards on one account, so you need one international-enabled card with a limit that survives a plan upgrade, which takes effect immediately with the difference charged for the current cycle. Your bank's conversion margin and card fees sit on top of the dollar price; ask the bank for the figure rather than assuming one.

VAT is the line item most SA owners miss. The rule, as ENS Africa sets it out in its analysis of imported and electronic services, is that where a non-resident supplier is not VAT-registered in South Africa, the recipient must account for VAT at 15% to SARS. That self-assessment is a final cost with no input deduction, but where the supplier is registered and charges VAT, the recipient can claim input tax on the portion used for taxable supplies.

I did not find a Klaviyo page stating whether it is VAT-registered in South Africa or charges VAT to South African customers, so check your first invoice for a VAT line. If Klaviyo does charge VAT, the self-assessment case never arises. Commentary on imported services says the VAT is triggered only to the extent the service is used for non-taxable purposes, so a VAT vendor making only taxable sales is typically unaffected. Confirm your own position with your accountant; this is general information, not tax advice.

Side calculation: worst case on a $100 plan

If VAT applied as a final cost, 15% of $100 is $15, which is R246 a month at R16.42 to the dollar. The all-in figure would be $115, or R1,888 a month, against R1,642 without VAT. It is a ceiling for a business that cannot recover the VAT, not a prediction for yours.

Where the Bill Jumps and How List Hygiene Moves It

Klaviyo pricing jumps whenever your active profile count crosses a tier ceiling, and the most controllable cause is dormant contacts you keep paying to hold. Trackers note that unengaged profiles still count toward the tier unless you remove them.

Worked example (hypothetical, arithmetic only): a store holds 10,000 active profiles and decides 5,000 have not been worth mailing for a long time. At 10,000 profiles the plan is $150 a month; at 5,000 it is $100. The saving is $50 a month, which is R821 at R16.42 to the dollar, or R9,852 a year.

The saving only exists if the cleaned list lands at or under a tier ceiling, so count first and decide second. The cleaning itself is covered in how to clean your list and fix deliverability.

The plan does not shrink by itself. Klaviyo's billing article says a Profiles and Email plan does not automatically downgrade when you reduce profiles: you choose a lower tier once your active count updates, and that tier must cover the count, or you enable auto-downgrade under flexible sending. Downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle with no mid-cycle refund, whereas crossing a ceiling upgrades you automatically at the end of the cycle.

Takeaway: price the list, not the sends

Klaviyo pricing responds to profile count, so the cheapest email programme is the one that mails people who still open. A cleaning pass followed by a manual downgrade can be worth thousands of Rand a year, as the example above shows.

SMS and Other Costs Outside the Email Tier

The Klaviyo pricing tiers above cover email only; text messaging is a separate cost that trackers describe as usage-based on top of the profile plan. Klaviyo's explainer says its text channels, including SMS, MMS, WhatsApp and RCS, run on a committed spend that burns down as you send, with rates that vary by message type and country.

The trackers quote US message rates, which tell you little about sending to South African numbers, so this post prints no SMS rate. Read the destination rate for South Africa in your own account before you budget it.

For a cost view of the channel on its own, see SMS marketing costs in South Africa, and for the broader platform picture email marketing costs adds agency and design time. Klaviyo also sells helpdesk, customer hub and analytics products with their own starting prices, which the billing article lists; none of them are in the Email plan figures above.

A temporary spike does not have to force an upgrade. Klaviyo's flexible sending gives temporary access to the next tier's send volume at your current plan's unit rate, then returns you to base the next cycle, which suits a Black Friday send more than a permanent plan change.

Which Plan Size Fits Your List

The right starting plan is the smallest tier that covers your real active profile count, and the table below prices the rungs this post could verify. Use the active profile number from your Billing screen, not your newsletter total, and if your count sits between two listed rungs, the next rung up is the ceiling and the exact price is in Klaviyo's calculator. The free plan has two separate limits, 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month, and a store mailing weekly to even a modest list can reach the send limit first.

The "Watch for" column is a rough guide from the billing rules above, not Klaviyo guidance.

If a Klaviyo tier looks heavy against your margins, compare it on the same list size with Klaviyo versus Omnisend (Growth Pulse Media is an Omnisend Certified Partner, so weigh that comparison accordingly) or Klaviyo versus Mailchimp. For automation more broadly, marketing automation pricing sets Klaviyo beside other platforms.

Why South African Businesses Choose Growth Pulse Media

Growth Pulse Media is a Johannesburg digital marketing agency founded by Dirk van Greuning, who built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before founding it. The agency is a registered Shopify Partner and an Omnisend Certified Partner, executes all work in-house, and keeps a limited client load so senior attention stays on each account.

For a store choosing or re-costing an email platform, our email marketing service starts with the cost question: list size, send volume, the platform's billing currency and what the programme has to earn back. Ask for a free audit and we will work through that comparison with you.

Who This Is NOT For

You need a Rand invoice. Klaviyo bills in US dollars and its help centre says a currency setting changes only the display symbol. If your finance process cannot handle a dollar-billed card payment, price a platform that invoices locally.

You expect a flat fee for a growing list. The Email plan is tiered by active profiles, so cost rises as you collect contacts. A fixed monthly budget needs a list cap or regular cleaning.

You want an SMS-heavy programme costed from this page. This post prices the Email plan only, and it deliberately prints no SMS rate because the rates found were not South African.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Klaviyo cost per month in South Africa?

Klaviyo costs nothing for up to 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month, then $20 a month at 500 profiles, $30 at 1,000, $100 at 5,000, $150 at 10,000 and $400 at 25,000 on the Email plan. At R16.42 to the dollar those are R328, R493, R1,642, R2,463 and R6,568. Paid tier prices are tracker-reported, so confirm them in your Billing screen.

Does Klaviyo bill in rand?

No. Klaviyo states that its listed prices are in US dollars and that this is the currency on every invoice, though your card statement may show a local-currency amount. Changing the account currency to Rand only changes the symbol in reports and templates, so your Rand cost depends on your bank's exchange rate.

Is Klaviyo free for small South African businesses?

Klaviyo has a free plan for up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, including email and SMS editors, automations, segmentation and reports. Once you pass those limits you cannot send more until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade to a paid plan.

Does Klaviyo charge VAT to South African customers?

The Klaviyo pages checked for this post do not say, so look for a VAT line on your first invoice. If a non-resident supplier is not VAT-registered in South Africa, the SA recipient must account for VAT at 15% to SARS, and ENS Africa describes that self-assessment as a final cost with no input deduction. Commentary on imported services says the VAT arises only to the extent the service is used for non-taxable purposes, so ask your accountant how it applies to your business.

Do unsubscribed contacts count towards Klaviyo pricing?

Not once they are email-suppressed. Klaviyo says unsubscribed and suppressed contacts do not count toward billing, but an SMS-only unsubscribe does not remove a profile you can still email. Any other emailable profile counts, regardless of consent status, so checkout-only email addresses add to your total.
