Free lead generation tools are no-cost software tiers that each handle one job in a B2B pipeline (finding contacts, storing them, booking meetings, tracking enquiries) and each stops at a published limit. This post maps those limits for South African B2B lead generation teams, inside the wider guide to the whole channel, so you can see which limit you will hit first.
The answer is usually not the one vendors advertise. A free CRM that holds 1,000 contacts is rarely the constraint; the monthly credit allowance on the tool that finds those contacts is. Where a free tier is the right answer and where it quietly caps your pipeline is what the rest of this post works out, with the arithmetic shown.
One rule sits over all of it: a tool that costs R0 does not change what POPIA expects of your outreach. That section comes after the limits, because the limits decide how much outreach you can even run.
Quick Answer
A workable free stack for a small South African B2B team is Hunter for finding email addresses (50 credits a month), HubSpot's free CRM for storing them (2 users, 1,000 contacts), and Calendly for booking (one event type). For inbound, add Google Business Profile and Search Console. For outbound-led teams, sourcing runs out long before storage does, and POPIA still governs every cold email you send with any of them.

Get a Stack ReviewWhich Free Lead Generation Tools Does a South African B2B Team Need?
A B2B team needs free lead generation tools for five jobs: finding contacts, storing them, booking meetings, capturing inbound enquiries and measuring where those enquiries come from. One tool per job is enough to start. The table lists each tool's published free limit as shown on the vendor's own page in October 2026.
| Job | Free tool | Published free limit | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find email addresses | Hunter | 50 credits per month; no automatic verification on the free plan | A short, hand-picked list of named accounts |
| Store and track contacts | HubSpot free CRM | Up to 2 users, 1,000 contacts, no expiry | Founder-led selling with one or two people |
| Store and track contacts | Zoho CRM Free | 3 users, described as forever free | A third seller who needs pipeline access |
| Book meetings | Calendly Free | One event type, one calendar connection | One person, one kind of call |
| Capture inbound enquiries | HubSpot form builder and meeting scheduler | Included with the free CRM | Putting enquiries straight into the contact list |
| Local and search visibility | Google Business Profile | Free to add or claim, for eligible businesses | Businesses customers find by searching |
| Measure search enquiries | Google Search Console | Free service from Google | Seeing which queries reach your site |
The HubSpot and Zoho CRMs overlap on purpose: pick one. HubSpot's page lists the form builder, live chat, deal pipelines and email tracking as part of the free CRM, which is why it is the pick when inbound matters; this post has not compared Zoho's feature list. Zoho's free edition wins on one point we checked: a third user.
For a side-by-side of paid and free options across prospect data, outreach and CRM, see our B2B lead generation tools comparison for South Africa. This post covers only the no-cost layer and its ceilings. If you have not chosen a CRM yet, how a CRM feeds your pipeline explains what to record in it.
Where Does the No-Cost Stack Break First?
The no-cost stack breaks at sourcing, because the credit allowance on the contact-finding tool is far smaller than the contact limit on the CRM that stores the results. Hunter's free plan gives 50 credits a month. HubSpot's free CRM holds 1,000 contacts. The gap between those two numbers is the whole story.
The ceiling calculation
Hunter's pricing page says 1 credit buys one email found (through Domain Search, Email Finder or Bulk Email Finder) and 0.5 credit buys one email verified. The free plan has no auto-verification, so you run verification yourself and pay those credits.
Find plus verify = 1 + 0.5 = 1.5 credits per contact. 50 credits ÷ 1.5 = about 33 verified contacts per month.
HubSpot's 1,000-contact limit ÷ 33 contacts per month = about 30 months to fill. Even with no verification at all, 1,000 ÷ 50 credits = 20 months.
Read that the other way round. If the aim is a pipeline of several hundred named accounts, the Hunter allowance is the wall in the first month, and the CRM cap is irrelevant. If your contacts instead arrive through forms on your own site, the CRM cap becomes the nearer limit. The tools that fail first depend on whether you outbound or inbound.
The second-order limit is meetings. Calendly's free plan has one event type and does not include integrations such as HubSpot, so a booked call does not write itself into the CRM; someone logs it by hand. That is workable at a handful of calls a week and a source of lost records beyond that.
Takeaway: sourcing is the bottleneck
With free lead generation software, the monthly credit allowance on the contact-finding tool sets how fast an outbound-led CRM fills, long before the CRM's own limit matters. Fixing the sourcing step, by hand-picking target accounts from your own market knowledge, comes before comparing CRMs.
What POPIA Still Requires When the Software Costs Nothing
POPIA applies to the personal information you process and the messages you send, whatever the software costs. The Information Regulator's Guidance Note on Direct Marketing is dated 3 December 2024 and covers unsolicited electronic communications under section 69 of POPIA; the Information Regulator's guidance notes page lists it.
The primary PDF would not load as readable text on our fetch, so this section relies on law-firm summaries of the note; read the note itself on the Regulator's page before you build a process on it.
DLA Piper Africa's review reports that direct marketing by electronic communications generally requires consent, subject to certain exceptions, one of which covers existing customers under section 69(3). A Covington summary adds that a business may make only one request for consent, and only where consent has not previously been withheld. DLA Piper also reports that every such message must carry the identity of the sender and an address to which the recipient can send a request that the messages cease.
Three points matter for free tools:
- Finding an address is not permission to email it. A finder such as Hunter locates an address; it says nothing about whether the owner agreed to hear from you.
- Do not assume a business-email exemption. The DLA Piper and Werksmans summaries both say the note does not specifically address business email addresses, so a company address is not automatically safe.
- Legitimate interest is not the route for electronic marketing. Werksmans' summary says the note allows legitimate-interest reasoning, with a three-stage assessment, for non-electronic direct marketing. For electronic marketing the routes it describes are consent, a single request for consent to someone who has not withheld it, or the existing-customer exception.
The practical consequence is that free B2B lead generation tools suit research and warm introductions better than volume cold email. Our guide to POPIA-compliant lead generation sets out the channel-by-channel position, and bought databases and POPIA covers why a purchased list does not solve the problem. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm your approach with a POPIA specialist.
What Does the First Paid Step Cost in Rand?
Hunter Starter costs $34 per month billed yearly (about R558) and Calendly Standard $10 per seat per month (about R164), and each removes a limit the free plan imposes. The table converts the vendors' US-dollar prices at R16.42 per dollar, which is the SA Digital Cost Index (SADCI) calculation assumption for August 2026, not a live exchange rate.
| Tool | First paid step (USD) | In Rand at R16.42 | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter Starter | $34 per month, billed yearly | about R558 | Automatic verification, plus 2,000 credits a month |
| Calendly Standard | $10 per seat per month | about R164 | Unlimited event types, multiple calendars, and HubSpot and Mailchimp connections |
Both are listed prices on each vendor's own page in October 2026; check for VAT and billing terms before you commit. Hunter's step multiplies the monthly credit allowance forty-fold (2,000 against 50), which is the clearest case of a free limit worth paying to remove. HubSpot and Zoho paid tiers were not priced for this post, so look at each vendor's page before assuming the next step up.
Which Stack Fits a One-, Two- or Three-Person Team?
The right free stack depends on how many people sell, because the user limits on the CRMs differ by one seat. HubSpot's free CRM stops at two users and Zoho's free edition at three. The right stack is the one whose limits you will not reach this quarter.
| Situation | Suggested free stack | Watch for | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| One founder selling | Hunter + HubSpot free CRM + Calendly + Google Business Profile | Hand-logging Calendly bookings into the CRM | A short list of named accounts and some inbound |
| Two people selling | The same stack; both seats fit HubSpot's two-user limit | Both people sharing one Calendly event type and calendar | A founder plus one salesperson or partner |
| Three sellers | Zoho CRM Free in place of HubSpot, with Hunter for finding | HubSpot's free CRM stops at two users, so a third seller needs a paid seat or Zoho | A small team that needs shared pipeline |
| Inbound-led, few outbound targets | HubSpot forms and scheduler + Search Console + Business Profile | The 1,000-contact cap arrives sooner than the Hunter limit | Businesses customers already search for |
For a business with one or two sellers, free lead generation tools for small business use are a legitimate starting point rather than a compromise.
The honest cost is time: the stack is not integrated, so someone moves data between tools by hand. That cost is small while the list is short and grows with every new contact. Once it hurts, the answer is usually a better process first and a paid tool second. To see what a paid lead costs against that effort, see cost per lead in SA by channel.
Takeaway: match the stack to the seat count
One or two sellers fit HubSpot's free CRM, which allows two users. A third seller means Zoho's free edition (three users) or a paid HubSpot seat. In every case the finder's credit allowance, not the CRM, sets how many new contacts you can add.

Request a Free AuditWhy South African Businesses Choose Growth Pulse Media
Growth Pulse Media is a Johannesburg agency that runs B2B lead generation for South African businesses, led by an operator rather than a software reseller. Dirk van Greuning built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before founding Growth Pulse Media in Johannesburg. All work is executed in-house, and the agency keeps a limited client load so each account gets senior attention.
For B2B teams that have outgrown the free layer, our B2B lead generation service for South African businesses covers targeting, outreach and booked meetings, built around the compliance position described above.
Who This Is NOT For
A free stack is the wrong starting point for four kinds of team, and each is better served by a different first move.
You need volume. If the plan is hundreds of new named contacts every month, a 50-credit allowance will not carry it. Budget for a paid finder or an outsourced process from the start.
You do not yet know who buys. No tool fixes an undefined buyer. If you cannot name the job titles and company types you want, a free stack just helps you contact the wrong people faster.
You want to mass-email a scraped or purchased list. The guidance on electronic direct marketing does not offer a B2B exemption, and a free tool does not change that. This approach carries compliance risk, and this post does not help with it.
You have four or more sellers, or three who need HubSpot's inbound features. HubSpot's free CRM stops at two users and Zoho's free edition at three, so a fourth seller, or a third who needs HubSpot's forms and scheduler, means paying or switching.

What are the best free lead generation tools for a South African B2B team?
The best free lead generation tools for a small South African B2B team are Hunter for finding addresses, HubSpot's free CRM (or Zoho CRM Free for three users), Calendly for booking, and Google Business Profile and Search Console for inbound visibility. Choose by the limit you will reach first, not the feature list.
Is HubSpot's free CRM really free?
HubSpot states that its free CRM is free with no expiration date, with up to two users and 1,000 contacts. Its page lists forms, live chat, email tracking and deal pipelines among the included features.
How many contacts can Hunter's free plan find in a month?
Hunter's free plan includes 50 credits per month. Hunter's pricing page puts one found email at 1 credit and one verification at 0.5 credit, so finding and verifying each contact costs 1.5 credits: about 33 verified contacts a month.
Can I email addresses I find with a free tool under POPIA?
Not automatically. The Information Regulator's December 2024 guidance says electronic direct marketing generally requires consent, subject to exceptions such as the existing-customer rule in section 69(3). It does not specifically address business email addresses, so do not assume a B2B exemption. Take advice before you send.
When should I stop using free lead generation software and pay?
Pay when a free limit blocks a result you have already shown works, such as running out of finder credits while your outreach is booking calls. Hunter's first paid plan is $34 per month billed yearly, about R558 at the R16.42 index rate. Do not pay before that proof exists.
