Zoho CRM vs Bigin is the choice between Zoho's full CRM platform, which offers custom modules, sales forecasting, lead scoring and Blueprint processes, and Bigin, its simpler pipeline tool for very small teams, which has no custom modules on any plan. This post sets the two against each other in Rand, for the buying decisions covered in our guide to CRM software in South Africa.
Both products come from Zoho and Zoho documents a migration path from Bigin to Zoho CRM, so the real question is rarely "which is better". It is whether your business will hit Bigin's limits within the life of the contract, and what an upgrade would then carry across and leave behind.
Quick Answer
Choose Bigin if you have a small team that sells through one to a few pipelines and needs no custom modules, forecasting or Blueprint processes. Choose Zoho CRM if your sales process needs objects beyond contacts, companies and deals, or reporting depth. At five users and R16.42 to the dollar, Bigin Premier costs about R985 a month, against about R1,149 for Zoho CRM Standard. The Bigin price is from Bigin's own page; the Zoho CRM price is from a third-party tracker and the gap depends on it, so confirm it on Zoho's page.

Bigin is a pipeline-focused CRM that Zoho sells separately for very small teams, while Zoho CRM is its full platform with editions from Free to Enterprise. They share a vendor but are different products with different feature ceilings.
The simplest way to see the gap is the Free plan on each side. According to Bigin's own pricing page, Bigin Free is for one user and holds 500 records. Zoho CRM's pricing page describes its Free edition as forever free for up to three users. Those starting points already hint at the intent: Bigin is built around a solo owner or a very small team, Zoho CRM around a team that will grow.
Bigin's paid plans are Express, Premier and Bigin 360. Zoho CRM's paid editions run from Standard through Professional to Enterprise. The names overlap in price at the low end, which is why buyers compare them, and why the feature differences below decide more of the outcome than the sticker price.
What Do the Plans Cost in Rand?
Bigin costs US$7 to US$18 per user per month on annual billing and Zoho CRM Standard to Enterprise costs US$14 to US$40, which is about R115 to R296 and about R230 to R657 at R16.42 to the dollar. Both vendors bill in dollars, so Zoho CRM pricing South Africa teams pay moves with the exchange rate. R16.42 is the index calculation assumption of the SA Digital Cost Index (SADCI) for August 2026, an assumption for comparison and not today's rate.
| Plan (annual billing) | Per user per month | In Rand (about) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bigin Express | US$7 | R115 | One or two people, three pipelines at most |
| Bigin Premier | US$12 | R197 | Small team, five team pipelines |
| Bigin 360 | US$18 | R296 | Larger small team, 15 team pipelines |
| Zoho CRM Standard | US$14 | R230 | Teams that need forecasting and custom modules |
| Zoho CRM Professional | US$23 | R378 | Structured processes, Blueprint, inventory |
| Zoho CRM Enterprise | US$40 | R657 | Territories, approvals, sandbox |
The Bigin prices come from Bigin's own pricing page, fetched in October 2026. Zoho's pricing page offers a ZAR option in its currency selector but did not display the Standard, Professional or Enterprise numbers when we fetched it, so the Zoho CRM dollar prices come from a third-party price tracker checked in August 2026. Treat the Zoho CRM prices, and the R164 gap below that depends on the Standard price, as unverified until you confirm them on Zoho's page with ZAR selected. Monthly billing costs more than annual on both products.
Worked example: the seat maths for 5 and 10 users
5 users on Bigin Premier: 5 × US$12 = US$60 a month, or about R985. 5 users on Zoho CRM Standard: 5 × US$14 = US$70, or about R1,149. The gap is US$10 a month, about R164.
10 users on Bigin Premier: US$120, about R1,970. 10 users on Zoho CRM Standard: US$140, about R2,299.
At these team sizes the licence difference is small. What you are really buying with the extra spend is capability, so the next section on limits is the better guide to the decision. For a wider view of what CRM spend looks like locally, see our breakdown of CRM software pricing in South Africa.
Which Limits Decide the Choice?
The limits that decide the choice are custom modules, custom fields, pipeline count and process tooling, because those are what you cannot configure your way around once you are inside a plan.
Bigin's own comparison of Bigin and Zoho CRM editions lists these differences, and it is the fairest single reference for a Bigin vs Zoho CRM check because the vendor itself publishes it:
| Capability | Bigin | Zoho CRM | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom modules | None on any plan | Offered from Standard; 25 on Professional | Zoho CRM if you track anything besides contacts, companies and deals |
| Custom fields per module | 10 (Express), 25 (Premier), 50 (360) | 155 on Professional | Zoho CRM for data-heavy intake |
| Sales forecasting and lead scoring | Not in any plan | Included from Standard | Zoho CRM if you manage to a target |
| Blueprint process enforcement | None | 3 on Professional | Zoho CRM if stage discipline matters |
| Webhooks | None | Available on Professional | Zoho CRM for custom integrations |
| Records | 50,000 (Express), 100,000 (Premier), 1 million (360) | 10 GB data storage on Professional | Rarely the deciding factor for a small team |
Custom modules are the real dividing line
In a zoho crm vs bigin decision, the question that settles most cases is custom modules. Bigin has no custom modules on any plan, so it is limited to built-in records such as contacts, companies and deals. If your business needs to track something else as its own object, such as properties, vehicles, policies, shipments or projects, Bigin cannot hold it as a module on any plan. Zoho CRM can, from its Standard edition.
Bigin's strength sits on the other side of the table. For Bigin CRM South Africa buyers, a small team that lives in a deal pipeline, an inbox and WhatsApp gets a lighter tool with less to configure. Bigin's pricing page lists email and WhatsApp integration on Express, and says all paid plans include a free onboarding session and phone, email and chat support. If you plan to connect the channel to your CRM, our guide to WhatsApp CRM integration in South Africa covers what to check.
Bigin fits: a three-person installation business that quotes, follows up and closes deals in one linear pipeline, with no need to report on forecast versus target. Contacts, companies and deals cover everything it tracks.
Zoho CRM fits: an estate agency or freight business that must track properties or shipments as records linked to contacts. That needs a custom module, and Bigin does not offer one.

Upgrading from Bigin to Zoho CRM is a supported migration inside Zoho, but it creates your Zoho structure according to the limits of the edition you buy, not a copy of what you had.
Zoho's help page for upgrading from Bigin lists what moves: users, companies, contacts, team pipelines, sub-pipelines, stages, tasks, events, notes, attachments, associated products and photos. Custom fields migrate only up to the target edition's limit. Team pipelines in Bigin become layouts in the Deals module in Zoho CRM, and sub-pipelines become pipelines.
Three details are easy to miss. First, Zoho's own example is a Bigin account with five team pipelines moving to Zoho CRM Professional, where only one team pipeline migrates because Professional supports one layout. Second, the same help page says Zoho CRM Standard supports only 10 custom fields and 5 pipelines for migration: its example is 25 Bigin custom fields moving to Standard, where only 10 migrate. Bigin Premier allows 25 custom fields per module and Bigin 360 allows 50, so a move to Standard can drop fields. Third, add-ons, including purchased phone numbers, do not migrate, and the Bigin subscription stays active until you cancel it manually.
The practical reading: Zoho Bigin vs Zoho CRM is partly a question of when you will move. Starting on Bigin is cheap and reversible if your process is simple, but a multi-pipeline, field-heavy Bigin account moving to Standard or Professional is where the surprise sits. Our piece on CRM implementation cost in South Africa covers what a migration adds in time and fees.
Does Your Customer Data Leave South Africa?
Where a CRM stores customer records matters under POPIA, because section 72 restricts a responsible party in South Africa from transferring personal information to a third party in a foreign country unless one of several listed grounds applies, among them recipient protection, consent and contractual necessity.
Zoho's data centre page says data is stored in the region chosen at signup. The regions it lists are the US, Canada, India, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, plus facilities in China. South Africa is not on that list, and Zoho's data centre page is worth rechecking before you decide because such lists change. A South African team on either product should expect its contact records to sit outside the country, and the choice of Bigin or Zoho CRM does not change that.
That is not a prohibition. Section 72(1) allows a transfer where, among other grounds, the recipient is bound by law or a binding agreement giving substantially similar protection, the data subject consents, or the transfer is necessary for a contract with the data subject.
Data location in one paragraph
Zoho lists no South African datacentre for either product, so a South African team should assume its CRM records are held abroad and ask its POPIA adviser which section 72 ground, if any, applies before importing a client list.
Whether your use of a cloud CRM falls under a particular ground depends on your contract with the vendor and your own facts, so take it to your POPIA adviser or information officer before you migrate a client list. We checked the wording of section 72 on a secondary source, popia.co.za, and not on the Act itself.
Zoho CRM vs Bigin: How Do You Decide? A Decision Table
A decision between the two products reduces to six situations that depend on your team size, what you track and how you manage the process, and each points to a plan rather than a product in general.
| If your situation is… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo owner, one pipeline, under 500 records | Bigin Free | No cost, 500-record cap is the thing to watch |
| Two to five people, one to three pipelines, deals and contacts only | Bigin Express or Premier | Lowest cost, no unused modules to configure |
| You track properties, shipments, policies or jobs as records | Zoho CRM Standard or higher | Custom modules exist only on the Zoho CRM side |
| You manage to a forecast or score leads | Zoho CRM Standard | Forecasting and lead scoring are not in any Bigin plan |
| You need enforced stage rules or webhooks | Zoho CRM Professional | Blueprint and webhooks are not in Bigin |
| Already running three or more pipelines and expect to move up | Check edition limits first | Pipelines migrate as layouts and fields are capped: Standard keeps 10 custom fields and 5 pipelines, Professional one layout |
If neither product fits, the market has other choices. Our comparison of HubSpot vs Pipedrive for South African teams covers two of them, and the broader CRM for small business guide sets out the selection criteria.

You need a legal opinion on cross-border transfers. The POPIA section above explains what section 72 says and where Zoho stores data. It does not tell you which lawful ground applies to your business.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bigin the same as Zoho CRM?
No. Bigin is a separate, simpler product from Zoho aimed at very small businesses, with no custom modules on any plan. Zoho CRM is the full platform with custom modules, forecasting and Blueprint processes in its higher editions.
How do Bigin and Zoho CRM seat prices compare in South Africa?
Bigin Express is US$7 and Zoho CRM Standard is US$14 per user per month on annual billing, which is about R115 against about R230 at a rate of R16.42 to the dollar. Bigin 360 at US$18, about R296, costs more per seat than Zoho CRM Standard, so compare plans by capability, not by name. The Zoho CRM price is from a third-party tracker, so confirm it on Zoho's page.
Can I move from Bigin to Zoho CRM later?
Yes. Zoho provides an upgrade path from inside Bigin that migrates contacts, companies, team pipelines, stages, tasks, notes and attachments. Pipelines and custom fields are created only up to the target edition's limits, and add-ons such as purchased phone numbers do not migrate.
Does Zoho CRM store data in South Africa?
Zoho's data centre page does not list a South African region. It says data is stored in the region chosen at signup, so South African businesses should assume their records are held abroad and take POPIA section 72 advice.
In Zoho CRM vs Bigin, which is better for a small South African business?
Bigin suits a team of a few people running deals through a simple pipeline. Zoho CRM suits a business that needs custom modules, forecasting or enforced process steps, even if the team is small.
