A whatsapp business catalogue link is a web address that opens your product or service catalogue inside WhatsApp, so a customer can browse it without you sending photos one by one. You can share it in a chat, on your Status, or by email and other apps. Meta documents the whole-catalogue format for API catalogue link messages as wa.me/c/ plus your business number with the country code.

The link is a small piece of a bigger channel, set out in the complete WhatsApp marketing guide for South Africa. The part owners get wrong is not finding the link; it is knowing which link to send where, and what quietly breaks it. This post covers the link types, a decision table, the failure points documented by Meta, and the POPIA limit on who you may send it to.

Quick Answer

Your whatsapp business catalogue link is generated by WhatsApp Business, either for the whole catalogue or for a single item, and is shared from the catalogue screen by forwarding, copying, posting to Status or using the phone's share sheet. Do not edit the generated link: WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra, says it can't be customised and may break if you change it. If the catalogue is disabled, Meta's documentation says the link shows an "Invalid catalog link" message.

What a WhatsApp Business Catalogue Link Is and What It Opens

A catalogue link is a shareable address that points at either your entire catalogue or one item in it, and it opens in WhatsApp when the recipient taps it. According to WhatsApp's FAQ as quoted by ChatMitra's guide, the link opens the item or catalogue directly if it is viewed inside WhatsApp Messenger or the Business app; from an email or a browser, the recipient is offered a choice of how to open it (ChatMitra's catalogue guide).

Meta's developer documentation for API catalogue link messages describes the whole-catalogue format: https://wa.me/c/ followed by the business phone number including the country code. ChatMitra describes the same pattern for links made in the app (Meta catalog link messages; ChatMitra). For a South African number, country-code form means the 27 prefix instead of the leading zero. That is the standard international format, not a rule Meta states for South Africa specifically.

The format matters less for most owners, because the Business app generates it for you. It matters when you want to put the link on a printed menu, a QR code or an invoice template and need to check that the number in it is the number that actually owns the catalogue.

How to Share a WhatsApp Catalogue Link From the Business App

You share a catalogue link from the catalogue screen of the WhatsApp Business app, where each item and the whole catalogue have their own share option. ChatMitra's guide lists four routes: forward the link to existing chats or groups, post it to your Status, copy it to the clipboard, or use the phone's share sheet to send it by email, SMS or another app.

If you want to share a single product, the same guide says to open the catalogue, select the item and use its share option. Menu labels shift between app versions and phone makers, so treat the route as "Business tools, then Catalogue, then the item or the share-link icon" and check the exact wording on your own handset.

To share whatsapp catalogue link addresses outside WhatsApp, such as an email signature or a Facebook page, copy the link and paste it. Recipients who open the link from an email or a browser are offered a choice of how to open it, as described above, rather than landing straight in the catalogue, so a screenshot or a short message beside the link saves a confused reply.

The right link depends on how much the customer already knows: send the whole-catalogue link to people browsing, an item link to people who asked about one thing, and an interactive product message only if your setup supports it. The table below uses Meta's documented message types and limits, plus the link behaviour WhatsApp's FAQ describes (as quoted by ChatMitra).

What you sendWhat the customer seesDocumented limit or catchBest for
Whole-catalogue link (wa.me/c/ + number)Your full catalogue, opened in WhatsAppShows an "Invalid catalog link" message if the catalogue is disabled (Meta)New enquiries, social bios, signatures, QR codes
Single-item link from the catalogue screenOne product or service pageAuto-generated; cannot be customised and may break if edited (WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra)Answering "do you have the blue one?" in a chat
Single-product messageOne product with image, title and priceOne product per message (Meta)Quotes and reorders on the API
Multi-product messageUp to 30 products in sectionsCapped at 30 products per message (Meta)Curated shortlists such as a weekend menu
Product carouselUp to 10 scrollable product cardsCapped at 10 cards (Meta)Visual lines: bakes, furniture, accessories

Meta's developer documentation lists the message types, and says catalogue link messages work by assembling the wa.me link and sending it in a standard text message (Meta share products documentation). That documentation sits in Meta's business messaging (API) documentation, and I have not confirmed which of the product-message formats the Business app itself offers. Check on your own account, and see the comparison of WhatsApp Business and the API for the wider trade-off.

Takeaway: match the link to the question

A whole-catalogue link suits a customer who is still browsing. A single-item link suits a customer who asked about one product. Meta documents a cap of 30 products in a single multi-product message, so a long catalogue needs curated shortlists rather than one giant send. (ChatMitra puts catalogue size at up to 500 products; that is a third-party figure.)

Why a WhatsApp Catalogue Link Stops Working

A whatsapp catalogue link not working has two documented causes: Meta says a disabled catalogue returns an "Invalid catalog link" message, and WhatsApp's FAQ (as quoted by ChatMitra) says an edited link may break. The other rows below are the writer's hypotheses to test, not documented faults.

SymptomHypotheses to checkHow to tell them apart
Customer sees "Invalid catalog link"Catalogue disabled (documented); wrong number in the link or a typing error (hypotheses)Meta says a disabled catalogue produces this message. Open the link on your own phone, then compare the number in it to the business number
Link opens a browser page, not the catalogueExpected behaviour when opened from email or a browser (documented); customer lacks the app (hypothesis)WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra, says browser and email opens offer a choice of how to open. Test from your own email on a phone and on a laptop
Link works for you, fails for a customerLink edited by hand (documented risk); altered by an email client or shortener (hypothesis)WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra, says the generated link may break if you change it. Re-copy it from the catalogue screen and resend
Preview shows no product thumbnailsSent through the API without the preview optionMeta documents a preview_url parameter that, set to true, displays catalogue thumbnails

The pattern behind all four rows is that the link is generated, not designed. Printing a link on a banner before testing it from a customer's position, a different phone, a different network and a different app, is how businesses end up with a hundred copies of something that returns an error.

Sending a Catalogue Link Without Breaking POPIA

POPIA section 69 restricts unsolicited electronic direct marketing to people who have given consent or who are existing customers under the s69(3) exception, and a catalogue link counts when its purpose is to promote what you sell. The section prohibits direct marketing by electronic communication unless the person has consented or is, subject to subsection (3), a customer (section 69 as published at popia.co.za).

The exception is narrow. Contact details must have come from the sale of a product or service, the marketing must be for your own similar products or services, and the customer must have had a reasonable opportunity to object, free of charge, when the details were collected and on the occasion of each communication.

Consent has its own rules: you may approach a person only once to ask for it, and it must be requested in the prescribed manner and form. Every message must also identify the sender and give an address for requests that the messages stop.

Whether a given message is direct marketing, and whether it is unsolicited, turns on its purpose and context. A link sent in answer to a question a customer put to you is plausibly a lower-risk case than one pushed to a list, but this post does not treat that as settled law. A purchased or scraped list is the clearest case section 69 exists for. List building is covered in the guide to WhatsApp opt-in strategies. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Takeaway: who may receive the link

Under POPIA section 69, a catalogue link sent to promote your products by electronic message needs consent or the existing-customer exception. A link sent in answer to a customer's own question is plausibly lower risk, but whether a message is direct marketing depends on its purpose and context.

Where to Put a WhatsApp Business Catalogue Link So It Gets Opened

The best places for a catalogue link are the first auto-reply, replies to click-to-WhatsApp ads, your online shop, and printed QR codes or Status posts, because each reaches a customer who is already deciding. WhatsApp is the most-used app in South Africa; Yazi, citing GWI and DataReportal survey data from January 2025, reports use by roughly 94 to 96 percent of internet users (Yazi's country statistics). That is why a link that opens straight into WhatsApp removes a step that a website visit would add.

Four placements are worth testing:

  • Your first auto-reply or greeting. A customer who messages you gets the catalogue without waiting for a person. Pair it with a greeting that asks what they want.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads. When a Meta ad opens a chat, a catalogue link in the first reply gives the customer something to browse while you answer. The click-to-WhatsApp ads guide covers the ad side.
  • Your online shop. If you sell on a website as well, a catalogue link gives customers who prefer chat a second route to buy. See WhatsApp for ecommerce in South Africa for how the two fit.
  • Printed material and Status. A QR code or a Status post is cheap to try, but test the link from a second phone before printing.

For setup of the catalogue itself, products, photos and descriptions, see the sibling guide to WhatsApp catalogues in South Africa; this post deals only with the link.

Pre-send checklist

Is the catalogue enabled? Does the link carry your business number in country-code form? Did you copy it from the catalogue screen rather than retype it? Have you opened it from a second phone and from an email? Is the person you are sending it to a customer who asked, or someone who has consented?

Why South African Businesses Choose Growth Pulse Media

Growth Pulse Media was founded by Dirk van Greuning, who built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before starting the agency. All work is executed in-house, with a limited client load so each account gets senior attention. GPM is a registered Shopify Partner and an Omnisend Certified Partner, and runs paid acquisition on Meta Ads, the platform behind click-to-WhatsApp advertising. The WhatsApp marketing service page shows where the channel fits in a wider plan.

A catalogue link is not a marketing strategy on its own. It is the last step between an enquiry you paid to generate and a customer who can see what you sell.

Who This Is NOT For

This post is the wrong fit for readers who need click-by-click screens, API development detail or a buying list.

You need the exact click-path for your phone model. Menu labels change between app versions and handsets. WhatsApp's own help centre is the place to confirm current screens; this post covers which link to send and what breaks it.

You want to build the catalogue from scratch. Photos, pricing and product descriptions sit outside this post. Start with the catalogue setup guide linked above.

You plan to send the link to a purchased list. That is the case POPIA section 69 restricts, and no link format changes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my WhatsApp Business catalogue link?

Open the Catalogue screen in the WhatsApp Business app and use the share-link option for the whole catalogue or the share option on a single item. You can then forward it in WhatsApp, post it to Status, copy it or send it through the phone's share sheet. The whole-catalogue link follows the wa.me/c/ pattern followed by your business number in country-code form.

Why does my WhatsApp catalogue link say invalid?

Meta's documentation says the link shows an "Invalid catalog link" message when the catalogue is disabled. Also check that the number in the link is the business number and that the link was copied from the catalogue screen rather than retyped, because WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra, says the generated link may break if you edit it.

Can I customise my WhatsApp catalogue link?

Not the generated link itself. WhatsApp's FAQ, as quoted by ChatMitra, says the auto-generated catalogue or item link can't be customised and may break if you attempt to change it. If you want a shorter address for print, put the unchanged link behind a QR code and test it from another phone.

Can customers open a WhatsApp catalogue link without the app?

According to WhatsApp's FAQ as quoted by ChatMitra, the link opens directly inside WhatsApp, and from an email or browser the recipient gets a choice of how to open it. A customer without WhatsApp installed may not see your catalogue, so for those readers a website page or a PDF is a sensible fallback.

Is it legal to send my catalogue link to customers on WhatsApp in South Africa?

It depends on who receives it. POPIA section 69 prohibits unsolicited electronic direct marketing unless the person has consented or is an existing customer under the s69(3) exception. A link sent in answer to a customer's own question is plausibly lower risk, though whether a message is direct marketing depends on its purpose and context; a link sent to a purchased list is the clearest case the section restricts.
