A Shopify bulk price editor is any tool — built into the Shopify admin or installed as an app — that lets you change the price or compare-at price of multiple products in a single action, instead of opening each product listing individually.

If you run a Shopify store in South Africa, pricing updates come up regularly — before Black Friday, when the rand shifts and your landed costs move, and when you mark a seasonal range up or down. Doing it product by product is not just slow; on a 500-SKU catalogue it is genuinely risky — a miskeyed figure in a rush is live the moment you hit Save.

There are three native approaches built into Shopify and a large category of third-party apps that each solve a slightly different version of the problem. The right method depends on how many products you need to change, whether you need a scheduled start and automatic rollback, and whether your changes follow a formula or require individual figures.

This guide maps each option to the scenario it suits — including the VAT-inclusive arithmetic that catches SA stores out during promotional periods.

Quick Answer

A shopify bulk price editor updates prices across multiple products at once. Shopify's built-in admin editor handles spot updates on fewer than roughly 50 products; CSV export/import suits catalogues of 1,000 or more; a dedicated Shopify price editor app is the right tool when you need percentage-based rules, scheduled sales, or automatic price rollback — features the native editor does not offer.

For South African stores, the critical extra step is confirming that each Rand price you enter is VAT-inclusive (15%) before you save, because Shopify stores the price as-entered and displays it to customers.

What a Shopify bulk price editor does — and what it cannot do natively

Shopify's bulk price editor, in its native form, is a spreadsheet-like grid inside your admin that lets you select products or variants and overwrite the Price and Compare-at price fields directly. It is fast for spot fixes but has a hard ceiling: it only accepts final numbers.

If you want to raise a range of products by a set percentage to cover an import cost increase, you calculate each new price yourself before typing it in. There is no percentage-rule field in the native tool.

This matters for SA merchants because Rand price adjustments rarely follow clean numbers. Currency-driven cost increases, tiered promotional structures, and the need to keep prices VAT-inclusive and psychologically appealing — ending in a round figure rather than a precise decimal — all require formula work before you get to the editor. Knowing this in advance saves you a frustrated session at 10 p.m. the day before a promotion goes live.

Compare-at price mechanics: Shopify only shows the strikethrough original price and the sale badge on your storefront when the Compare-at price field is higher than the current Price field. If the two values are equal, or if Compare-at is lower, no badge appears. When running promotions, set your regular selling price in Compare-at and your discounted price in Price — not the other way around.

Method 1: Shopify's native admin bulk editor — step by step

Shopify's built-in bulk editor is the fastest option when you need to change fewer than roughly 50 products and each new price is already known. It requires no app installation and no file preparation. The full field list you can edit is documented in Shopify's bulk editing help article.

  1. Navigate to Products in your Shopify admin and use the filter or search bar to isolate the products you want to update — by collection, tag, vendor, or product type.
  2. Select the products using the checkboxes. A blue action bar appears at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click "Bulk edit." Shopify opens a grid view of the selected items.
  4. Add the pricing columns. Click the Columns button (top right of the grid) and check Price and Compare-at price if they are not already visible.
  5. Enter your new prices directly into the grid cells. Press Tab or Enter to move between cells.
  6. Save. Changes go live immediately — there is no scheduled-publish option in the native editor.
Good use case: You sell 30 handmade leather goods. Tannery prices rose and you need to increase every item by a specific Rand amount. You have calculated the new prices in a spreadsheet, and you just need to enter them. The native editor is the fastest path.
Poor use case: You sell 600 clothing SKUs across 8 collections and you want to discount them all by 20% for a 48-hour flash sale, then automatically revert to original prices. The native editor cannot apply a formula, cannot schedule, and cannot roll back — you will be repeating the entire process manually when the sale ends.

One practical note: Shopify recommends Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for the bulk editor. Microsoft Edge can trigger URL-length errors that corrupt the interface mid-session — not ideal when you are editing prices the night before a promotion.

Method 2: CSV export and import for large catalogues

CSV import is the right tool when you need to bulk edit product prices across a large catalogue and you are comfortable working in a spreadsheet application. The workflow is: export your products to a CSV, update the Price and Compare-at price columns in Excel or Google Sheets using a formula, then re-import the file with overwrite enabled. It is the most direct way to Shopify bulk edit prices when you have final numbers and no scheduling requirement.

The full process:

  1. Go to Products > Export in your Shopify admin and export your full product list as a CSV.
  2. Open the file and locate the Price and Variant Price columns (multi-variant products have one row per variant). For sale pricing, use the Variant Compare At Price column.
  3. Apply your formula in the spreadsheet — for example, multiply the current Price column by 0.80 for a 20% reduction, and paste the original price into Compare At Price.
  4. Save the file as CSV UTF-8. Non-UTF-8 encoding can corrupt product titles or descriptions with Afrikaans characters and special symbols.
  5. Go to Products > Import, upload the file, and check "Overwrite any current products that have the same handle."
CSV warning: Any column that is blank in your import file will overwrite the matching field in your live store with a blank value. If you export a full product CSV, update only the Price columns, and re-import — that is fine. If you export a partial file with some columns missing, you can strip data from your products. Always export, edit, and re-import the same complete file.

Choosing your method: a decision table for SA stores

The best Shopify bulk price editing method depends on three factors: how many products you are updating, whether you need a formula or already have final prices, and whether the change needs to auto-revert.

MethodBest catalogue sizeFormula supportScheduling / rollbackBest for
Native admin bulk editorUp to ~100 products (practical operator heuristic — sessions beyond this become unwieldy; no hard platform limit)None — enter final prices manuallyNone — changes go live immediatelyOne-off spot updates with known final prices
Third-party app (free tier)Up to 100 products per campaign; suited to 100–500 SKU stores when split across campaignsPercentage, fixed value, cost-based rulesYes — schedule start/end with auto-revertSeasonal sales on small to mid-size catalogues; the right tool for the 100–500 SKU range
Third-party app (paid tier)Unlimited products per campaignAdvanced rules including vendor, tag, and collection filtersYes — unlimited concurrent campaignsRecurring promotions, Black Friday, multi-market Rand pricing
CSV export / importAny size — especially suited to 500+ productsFull formula support in your spreadsheetNone natively — requires a second CSV import to revertLarge catalogue overhauls, permanent price changes

Third-party Shopify bulk price editor apps

A third-party Shopify product price editor is the only route when you need percentage-based pricing rules, scheduled sales with automatic price rollback, or the ability to run multiple concurrent campaigns — none of which the native Shopify tools support. Each bulk price editor app on the App Store solves a slightly different part of that problem.

The Shopify App Store lists dozens of options. Three consistently appear in SA merchant discussions:

AppFree planPaid tierKey features
Smart Bulk Price EditorYes — up to 100 products, 1 campaign$8/month or $50 one-time (confirm the current Rand equivalent using the SARB reference rate before budgeting)Percentage/fixed/cost-based rules, scheduling, auto-revert, rollback history, market-specific pricing
Bulk Discounts Price EditorFree to installPaid tiers availableFlash sales, automatic rollback, sale badges, countdown timers, BOGO
Ablestar Bulk Product EditorYesFrom $9.99/monthBroader product field editing beyond price — also covers metafields, tags, descriptions

For most SA stores running one or two promotional campaigns per quarter, the free tier of Smart Bulk Price Editor handles the job — the 100-product limit covers a focused promotional range.

Stores with larger catalogues or year-round promotional programmes find the paid tier cost-effective: a few minutes of app-assisted editing replaces hours of CSV work before every Black Friday, Easter, or mid-season sale. Payment gateway fees on your Shopify plan already vary by plan tier; an $8/month app is modest overhead by comparison.

App rollback is the feature SA stores underuse: Schedule your Black Friday prices to activate at midnight and revert automatically at midnight three days later. No second manual update. No risk of forgetting to restore original prices on Monday morning.

The VAT-inclusive pricing calculation SA stores get wrong

South Africa's standard VAT rate is 15%, charged by SARS on taxable supplies. Most SA B2C Shopify stores display prices VAT-inclusive, meaning R100 on your storefront already contains R13.04 in VAT (calculated as R100 × 15 ÷ 115). When you apply a promotional discount, the arithmetic matters.

Consider a product priced at R200 inclusive of VAT. You want to run a 25% Black Friday discount:

  • Discounted price: R200 × 0.75 = R150
  • VAT component in R150: R150 × 15 ÷ 115 = R19.57
  • Set Compare-at price: R200
  • Set Price: R150

The error SA stores make is applying the discount to what they assume is the ex-VAT price, then discovering the displayed price is either off by a few Rand or the VAT output on their returns does not reconcile. Enter the final VAT-inclusive price you want customers to see. Shopify stores and displays the number you enter — it does not add VAT on top unless you have specifically configured your tax settings to display prices exclusive of tax.

VAT registration threshold (2026): Compulsory VAT registration applies once taxable supplies exceed R2.3 million in any 12-month period (updated from R1 million, effective 1 April 2026). Voluntary registration is available from R120,000. See SARS VAT registration guidance for current requirements. If you are not yet VAT-registered, your pricing logic differs — but the calculation above applies once you are.

One further point on the South African Consumer Protection Act: your Compare-at price should reflect a price at which you genuinely sold the product before the promotion. Displaying a "was" price that does not reflect a real former selling price may constitute a misleading representation under Section 29 of the Consumer Protection Act — consult the National Consumer Commission for your specific situation.

Bulk price editing makes it easy to set Compare-at prices across hundreds of products at once. Use that speed to record accurate historical prices, not to manufacture them.

The choice between discount codes and direct price changes also affects how you structure promotional pricing in Shopify — discount codes leave your list price unchanged, while bulk price edits change the displayed price and require the Compare-at field to show the saving. Both approaches integrate with quantity rules and volume pricing differently, so consider which mechanic suits your promotion before committing to a bulk edit.

Why South African Shopify stores work with Growth Pulse Media

Growth Pulse Media is a Shopify marketing agency based in Johannesburg and a registered Shopify Partner. Our founder built and scaled a large South African ecommerce business before founding the agency — which means the advice here comes from someone who has managed promotional price campaigns across thousands of SKUs on South African stores, not from reading about it.

We work with a limited number of clients at any time, which means senior attention on every store — no juniors inheriting your Black Friday setup the week before it goes live. Our work covers the full Shopify stack: catalogue structure, payment gateway integration with PayFast and Peach Payments, email automation via Klaviyo and Omnisend, and the performance marketing that drives traffic to your discounted prices. All execution is in-house.

Who this is not for

Bulk price editing solves a specific problem — updating many prices efficiently. The following store types are better served by a different approach or are not yet at a stage where the workflow adds value.

Stores with fewer than 20 products: One-by-one editing via each product page is faster than setting up a bulk workflow for a small catalogue. The admin bulk editor adds steps without meaningful time saving at this scale.
Stores running Shopify Markets with complex multi-currency pricing: The native bulk editor and basic apps handle ZAR pricing straightforwardly. Multi-market pricing — where you set different prices per market — requires either a Markets-compatible app or careful CSV column management. This guide covers single-market ZAR pricing; multi-market setup is its own subject.
Operators who want a one-time fire-and-forget solution: Bulk price editing is a repeating operational task. The best setup for your store (method + app tier + scheduling convention) takes an hour to configure but saves that hour on each subsequent promotion. If you are looking for a tool you configure once and never revisit, that is not how pricing management works in practice.
Stores not yet on Shopify: This guide covers Shopify's native tools and Shopify App Store apps. If you are evaluating platforms, the broader Shopify South Africa guide covers whether Shopify is the right fit for your business before you get to operational questions like bulk editing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a built-in bulk price editor?

Yes. Shopify's admin includes a bulk editor accessible from the Products section — select products with the checkboxes, click Bulk edit, and add the Price and Compare-at price columns via the Columns button. It is suitable for updating fewer than roughly 50 products with individual final prices. It does not support percentage-based changes or scheduled sales; for those you need a third-party app or CSV import.

What is the safest way to bulk edit prices for a large Shopify catalogue?

Export your full product list as a CSV from Products > Export, update the Price and Variant Compare At Price columns in a spreadsheet using your discount formula, save as UTF-8 CSV, then import with "Overwrite products with matching handles" selected. The main risk is leaving columns blank, which overwrites existing data. Always work from the complete exported file rather than a partial extract.

Can I schedule a sale to start and end automatically on Shopify without an app?

No. Shopify's native bulk editor applies price changes immediately and permanently — there is no built-in scheduling or auto-revert. To schedule a sale with an automatic rollback at a set time, you need a third-party app such as Smart Bulk Price Editor or Bulk Discounts Price Editor. Both have free tiers that cover smaller catalogues.

How do I set up a sale price in Shopify to show the strikethrough original price?

Enter your discounted selling price in the Price field and your original (higher) price in the Compare-at price field. Shopify shows the strikethrough and sale badge only when Compare-at price is strictly higher than Price. If the two values are equal or Compare-at is lower, no sale badge appears on the storefront.

Do I need to recalculate prices when applying discounts on a South African VAT-inclusive store?

Yes — Shopify stores and displays the exact Rand figure you enter, without adding or removing VAT. If your prices are VAT-inclusive at 15%, enter the final VAT-inclusive discounted price; the VAT component adjusts proportionally when the displayed price changes. The section above shows the arithmetic step by step.
